4 Reasons This is All So Hard + A Cool Tool to Breathe Easier

Why Getting the Right Help Isn’t Always Easy

Recently, I had the opportunity to present to a group of myofunctional therapists in the UK. My goal was to unpack some of the nuances behind the many 'airway dentistry' treatment options out there. But more importantly, I wanted to highlight why so many families feel stuck when trying to make decisions for their child’s care.

I shared four key reasons why the information parents receive from dental offices often falls short of what they truly need. I’d like to share those reasons with you now—whether they offer a fresh perspective or simply validate some of your own experiences.

  1. Inconsistency creates overwhelm.
Remember the Trident gum slogan about 4 out of 5 dentists agreeing? In “airway dentistry,” we’d be lucky to see that kind of consensus. Since dental school doesn’t cover this subject in depth, dentists must seek training from diverse independent organizations. This lack of standardization means treatment approaches vary widely, even within the same city, leaving parents to face a patchwork of conflicting recommendations.
  2. “This tool can help your child.”
Dentists who offer airway-focused care are often deeply invested in their tools and training—and for good reason. Most genuinely want to help, often motivated by personal experiences. However, no single tool or approach works for every child. If you trust the provider and their treatment feels right, great! But if something feels off, I can help you explore alternatives that may be a better fit and connect you with providers offering those options.
  3. We don’t know what we don’t know.
As a dentist, I’ve been guilty of repeating textbook answers, like blaming tooth grinding on stress or dismissing enlarged tonsils as “normal in kids.” It wasn’t until I dove deeper into airway health that I unlearned these outdated ideas. While it’s encouraging to see more holistic and integrative care available, parents still bear the burden of finding providers who align with this approach.
  4. Time is a limited resource.
In my early days as a full-time dentist, I barely had time to drink water, let alone explore new areas of learning. Many dentists are in the same position, focused on the immediate needs of their practice rather than seeking advanced training in specialized care like early orthodontic intervention. This makes it even harder for parents to find providers who truly understand their child’s unique needs.

How does that make you feel? 🤔

Despite these challenges, my work bridges the gap for parents feeling overwhelmed by inconsistent advice, limited options, and- in some cases- outdated knowledge. I’m here to simplify the process, provide clarity, and guide you toward the right care for your child—helping you make confident, informed decisions for their health and future.

Stuffy Noses? I've got just the thing for you...

I'm a big believer in non-pharmacological alternatives for solving problems. While I always prioritize finding the root cause, sometimes our bodies need a little extra boost to get back on track—especially when it comes to nasal breathing.

You’ve heard me mention nasal hygiene sprays like XLEAR before, but today I’m sharing something different: a headband that uses therapeutic sound wave technology to reduce nasal congestion. You wear it for just 15 minutes a day, and it’s designed to help restore better breathing patterns. Pretty cool, right?

I’ve spoken directly with dentists and myofunctional therapists who’ve tried this product, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. After chatting with a rep from the company, I even secured a discount for you: Use code ORIS199 to get it for $199 (normally $299). Full transparency: This isn’t an affiliate code—I don’t earn a commission. I’m just happy to help more families breathe better through their noses. 😄

Here’s the best part: A pediatrician is running a research trial right now. If you have a teen or a young adult aged 12–21 who is eligible, participants can receive the product for just $99 after the study is complete. Since it can be used by multiple people in the same household, this is a fantastic option for families dealing with winter congestion.

This headband is currently FDA-approved for adults, but they’re working on clearance for children in the coming months. I’ll keep you updated!

Let me know if you have questions or want more details to be able to participate in the study!

It’s been a wild few weeks over here. After sharing about ear tubes last month, my little one - our sweet pup Alfred - needed sedation and a scope to investigate recurring ear inflammation. At one point or another, we've tried it all for this guy - allergy testing and nutrition consults, acupuncture, probiotics, supplements, and more. His gut flared terribly post-procedure. We were up every 1–2 hours at night for days. Sleep was ruff, and I was wiped. While I know it’s not the same as...

Leveraging My Strengths to Support Your Family Have you ever taken the VIA Character Strengths test? It’s a survey tool that helps you take a look at yourself from a whole new perspective. This may seem a little off topic compared to my normal content, but hang with me. I’ve always been someone who takes her time with decisions—quietly and carefully weighing options, sometimes long after others think the choice is obvious. It can come across as indecision (just ask my spouse), but in truth,...

Hello hello! I promised there’d be a lot to share this month—so let’s dive in! Over the past few weeks, I had the chance to sit down with two incredible women who are each making waves in the world of health and wellness. It was a meaningful moment for me to share more about the work I’m doing and to connect with new listeners. We explored airway health topics and, excitingly, I got to introduce something I’ve been working on for a long time: my Smile Support Stairsteps. If you missed either...
